How to access internet in PC using GPRS enabled mobile phones
  (With Nokia models using data cables)

Recently I happened to go through some forums and found queries related to how to access internet facility in PCs using mobile phones (GPRS). I have been  successfully using GPRS service of AIRTEL (Bharti Cellular Ltd., Mumbai, India) to connect PC to internet via my mobile phone (Nokia 6610i). That is how I decided to create this  website to help those wanting to use mobile phone as modem to connect to internet. This site describes about how to access GPRS using Nokia models that use data cables for PC to mobile connectivity and using Windows98/NT/XP operating systems. 1. activating internet connection in Mobile phone

The first step is to activate internet connection in your cell phone. The procedure varies with the mobile operators. The current procedure for Airtel and Vodafone (previously Hutch) are as follows.

Airtel*: For prepaid connection, send  'GPRSACT' as SMS to 511 (For Maharashtra region). After getting confirmation, SMS 'MO' to 501. Airtel will send the GPRS settings for your cellular phone. After saving the settings, restart the phone and open services/wap/web/internet menu from where you can access internet using the mobile phone. The cost is near about 12 Indian Rupees (US$ 0.3) per day. Call 121 for information on how to activate the service in your region.

Vodafone*: For prepaid connection, send SMS 'ACT VL' to 144. For postpaid send SMS 'ACT VL' to 111. Call customer care at 111 for more information. Website: http://www.vodafone.in

* The procedure adopted by mobile phone operators is different in different locations. Also it is different for prepaid and postpaid connections.

2. Connecting Mobile phone to PC/Laptop

In order to connect mobile phone to PC or laptop, you need to buy a data cable that suits your phone. You will get an installation CD along with the datacable.

3. Next step is connecting PC to internet.

Following is the procedure for Nokia models.

  1. The first thing to do is installing the Connectivity Cable driver. Installation of cable driver will initiate automatically on inserting the CD. Continue with the installation procedure.

  2. After installing the cable driver, right click and open the contents of the data cable installation CD. Double click and run the file 'PC Suite'. Or

  1. After installing PC Suite, run 'PC Suite' from the start menu or desktop icon.

  2. Select 'manage connections'

  3. Select 'Serial cable'

  4. Click 'configure'.

  5. Select 'Prolific USB to Serial Bridge'

  6. Remember the number of this port, say com3(this will be required for installing modem)

  7. Go to control panel and open 'Phone and Modem options'

  8. Select the tab, modems.

  9. Click on add.

  10. Select the check box 'don't detect my modem, I will select from a list' and click next.

  11. In the window that opens select 'Nokia'

  12. In the menu on the right side select the model of your phone.

  13. Click next.

  14. In the next window it will ask 'In which port do you want to install the modem?'

  15. Select the same communication port that you specified for 'serial cable',  say com 3.

  16. A warning message will appear asking if you want to proceed.

  17. Select 'continue anyway'.

  18. Now you have completed installation of drivers for GPRS.

  19. You can make a new dial up connection (discussed below) and start connecting to internet.

Note: In some computers you can start surfing the net immediately after setting up a connection and clicking on the dial button. But in some other cases computer needs to be restarted before being able to browse internet. Make sure to remove the data cable from the system while restarting if this is the case. The data cable should be connected to the system only after loading of all the items in the 'notification tray' is complete (not only for the first time after installation, this need to be followed always. The cable should not be connected while booting the system. Otherwise you will get this error message. Error 633: The modem (or another connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly.)

Other error messages

  1. 'Subscribe to GPRS first': When you try to access GPRS while your account is still not activated.

  2. 'Check homepage address': When you have not activated the settings for your phone.

  3. 'GPRS not available': You may get this error message when you are out of coverage area. Some times this message may appear even if there is coverage, but due to poor quality of input data (you could be inside the coverage area, but still be not able to access GPRS). This problem will arise also when you recharge your prepaid mobile phone after the expiry of the validity period. In this case you have to remove and reinsert the SIM to access GPRS.

Data Cables for Nokia Models

Various models of connectivity cables and their supported phone models are given below. You have to identify which of these connectivity cables support your phone model. Before buying also check if your computer has a USB port. If your computer don't have a USB port, then you can opt for serial cable. Both USB as well as serial versions are available for these models.

  • Open control panel and run 'new connection wizard'

  • Click next

  • Select connect to the internet

  • Select set up my connection manually

  • Connect using dial up modem

  • Select the model of your phone

  • Type any name

  • Enter the phone number as *99#

  • Don't provide any user name and password

  • Click next
